  • Pitcher Setter in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Notes

His mother said that he was "sent by heaven to replace the lost one". A 'Pitcher Setter' was responsible for setting bluestone pitchers (square stone blocks) in place in roadsides and gutters around Melbourne. His wife Doreen was a widow with a young son. Doreen separated from Claud after the death of Marlene, and sued him for maintenance – he was ordered to pay 'thirty shillings a week for the complainant and ten shillings a week for the said child' (Thomas). Doreen claimed that Claud was her son’s father, but Claud obtained the birth certificate naming the father as her previous partner. The maintenance order was annulled when evidence was brought showing that Doreen had been married twice before - and not widowed or divorced!
