John enlisted on 16 Jan 1941 into the Royal Army Ordnance Corp and stayed with the RAOC for the whole of his military service. He was commissioned on 2 Aug 1947 at OCTU (Officer Cadet Training Unit) Eaton Hall, Cheshire, where he received the belt of honour. He served in Egypt, Singapore, Germany and many places around England and retired from the army on 29 Aug 1975.
